Combined Bachelor’s-and-Master’s (BAM) Pathway in Department of Urban & Regional Planning

Combined Bachelor’s & Master’s Degree (BAM) Pathways afford a way for highly motivated students to efficiently complete a Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree in a shorter time frame by double-counting course work (3 courses) at the undergraduate tuition rate. In most cases, pathway students graduate with the Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree within 5 years (total).  Graduates will earn a Bachelor of Arts in Hawaiian Studies and a Master of Urban & Regional Planning.  For more information contact Academic Advisor, Lehua Nishimura.

The new Graduate Certificate (GCERT) in Indigenous Planning in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning at UH Mānoa is now open for admissions. Applications are still welcome for the Fall 2026 term! 

 

The Graduate Certificate (GCERT) in Indigenous Planning offers students and professionals in planning and related fields an in-depth understanding of Indigenous Peoples, processes, and practices to enrich urban and regional planning. Designed for both standalone study or concurrent enrollment with a UHM graduate degree, the program prepares participants to:

• Engage respectfully with Indigenous worldviews, knowledge systems, and methodologies. 

• Apply Indigenous and Hawaiian-informed approaches to land use, sustainability, housing, and community development. 

• Center planning practices around core values such as pilina, kuleana, and aloha, with a focus on ethics, equity, and inclusion. 

 

This new GCERT is geared towards working professionals and enrolled students at UHM! There is a wide array of courses from the Department of Urban and Regional Planning, Hawaiʻinuiākua School of Hawaiian Knowledge, and other departments across UHM campus for enrolled participants to strengthen their ʻike (knowledge) on Indigenous planning principles and practices.
